چکیده

The capillary pressure–saturation relationship, Pc(Sw), is an essential element in modeling two-phase flow in porous media (PM). In most practical cases of interest, this relationship, for a given PM, is obtained experimentally, due to the irregular shape of the void space. We present the Pc(Sw) curve obtained by basic considerations, albeit for a particular class of regular PM. We analyze the characteristics of the various segments of the capillary pressure curve. The main features are the behavior of the Pc(Sw) curve as the wetting-fluid saturation approaches zero, and as this saturation is increased beyond a certain critical value. We show that under certain conditions (contact angle, distance between spheres, and saturation), the value of the capillary pressure may change sign.

Characterization of Liquid Bridge in Gas/Oil Gravity Drainage in Fractured Reservoirs

Gravity drainage is the main mechanism which controls the oil recovery from fractured reservoirs in both gas-cap drive and gas injection processes. The liquid bridge formed between two adjacent matrix blocks is responsible for capillary continuity phenomenon. The accurate determination of gas-liquid interface profile of liquid bridge is crucial to predict fracture capillary pressure precisely. ...

The Effects of Swelling and Porosity Change on Capillarity: DEM Coupled with a Pore-Unit Assembly Method

In this study, a grain-scale modelling technique has been developed to generate the capillary pressure-saturation curves for swelling granular materials. This model employs only basic granular properties such as particles size distribution, porosity, and the amount of absorbed water for swelling materials. Using this model, both drainage and imbibition curves are directly obtained by pore-scale...

Grain-scale modeling of arbitrary fluid saturation in random packings.

We propose a model for increasing liquid saturation in a granular packing, which can account for liquid redistribution at saturation levels beyond the well-studied capillary bridge regime. The model is capable of resolving and combining capillary bridges, menisci, and fully saturated pores to form local liquid clusters of any shape. They can exchange volume due to the local Laplace pressure gra...

CFD Simulation of Parameters Affecting Hydrodynamics of Packed Beds: Effects of Particle Shape, Bed Size, and Bed Length

Packed bed reactors have many applications in different industries such as chemical, petrochemical, and refinery industries. In this work, the effects of some parameters such as the shape and size of particles, bed size, and bed length on the hydrodynamics of the packed beds containing three spherical, cylindrical, and cubic particles types are investigated using CFD. The effect of the combinat...

A Single-shot Method for Determining Drainage and Imbibition Capillary Pressure Curves

A single-shot method to determine the capillary pressure curve employed a single rotational velocity centrifugation experiment and one-dimensional Centric Scan SPRITE (single-point ramped imaging with T1 enhancement) MRI (magnetic resonance imaging) to determine the fluid saturation distribution, S(r), along the length (r) of the core. A full capillary pressure curve can be directly determined ...
